ALA Children's Book Awards Announced!

If you're a librarian or book lover, it's better than the Oscars!  You're always hoping for your favorites to win, or you learn about some new titles that maybe you haven't read yet.  Here are some highlights: Newbery Award winner: Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena, Illustrated by Christian Robinson The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. This is the first time that I remember that a picture book author has received this award.  Interestingly enough, Last Stop on Market Street also won a Caldecott Honor award! Home by Carson Ellis

  In first grade, we brainstormed all the different types of homes there are in the world.  The students came up with some great suggestions, including a cave for a bear, a gingerbread house, an igloo, and a castle.   Ellis' book called  Home  describes  many different types of homes, some real and some fictional, and each was paired with a beautiful illustration.  It was a great opportunity for them to to think outside of the box and think of people and creatures all around the world and the places that they each call home!
