We were busy the week of Sept. 16-20

It's been a busy week here in the library!  Here are some highlights...

4th GRADE LIBRARY SCAVENGER HUNT:

4th graders used the Goose Chase app to complete a scavenger hunt around the library.  They worked in teams to test their knowledge about the library and its different sections.  It was great for them and also for me to see what areas of the library they are unfamiliar with and might need further instruction.  Each "mission" required the teams to take a photo or video of something from the list, such as a book from the fantasy fiction section, the circulation desk, the book return bin, etc.  They needed to take a photo of themselves on the rug displaying perfect storytime behavior, and videos of them using their shelf markers to remove and replace books.  It was a fun way to explore the library!
One mission was to find a book from the Horror/Suspense section and take a picture of themselves looking scared.

These girls knew just where the Book Return Bin was located.

Exhibiting perfect storytime behavior!

Found the graphic novel section!

Cheesing by the Lego wall.

A perfect find from the Humorous fiction section.

5TH GRADE SAINTS PROJECT:
5th Graders have been researching their chosen saint on the Chromebooks in preparation for their All Saints Day presentation.  They have been exploring websites posted for them on Google Classroom to find their information about their saints' early lives with their families as well as what miracles they performed and the details of their canonization.  I always enjoy seeing them dress up as the saint they have learned all about and sharing a page from their diary that they have written.

"NATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE" DAY

September 19th was "National Talk Like a Pirate Day," so we had a little fun and read Rufus Goes to Sea by Kim T. Griswell.  I brought out my best pirate voice ("Aaaargh!") as we read about a pig who would do anything to become a pirate.  It seemed like nothing he did was good enough for Captain Wibblyshins to hire him aboard his ship, until he learns about one special skill Rufus has that nobody else on the crew has.  The treasure that Rufus helps the crew find makes this story the perfect readaloud!

3rd GRADE DISCUSSES INTEGRITY:
Third graders heard the story A Bike Like Sergio's. In the story, Ruben sees a woman in the grocery store drop a $100 bill.  He can't believe his luck because he's really been wanting a cool bike like his friend Sergio has, but his family can not afford to buy him one.  The moral dilemma that Ruben struggles with led to a really good discussion about honesty and doing the right thing. One student even made a text-to-text connection with a book we read last year called Penny and Her Marble which had the same themes.  Bravo!

PRESCHOOL:

Preschool classes had their first story time in the library, and they were fantastic listeners! I am really looking forward to getting to know them better and sharing with them some of my favorite books!

 BOOK FAIR FUN!

Students have been buzzing about the Scholastic Book Fair all week, and have been so excited to share with me what books they purchased.  I love the enthusiasm! Thank you to Rosemary Schuster and parent volunteers for making this event so wonderful and putting more books in the hands of our students!

GETTING READY FOR DUSTI BOWLING AUTHOR VISIT NEXT WEEK

Author Dusti Bowling is visiting grades 4-7 next Tuesday, and students are very excited! Many ordered copies of her book for her to sign that day, and I just know they will enjoy them! We've also been working on a banner to help welcome her that day.  Dusti is an award winning author, and I can not wait to see her presentation!
