What's Happening at the BSS Library?

It's been a busy week here in the library!  Here are some highlights... 4th GRADE LIBRARY SCAVENGER HUNT: 4th graders used the Goose Chase app to complete a scavenger hunt around the library.  They worked in teams to test their knowledge about the library and its different sections.  It was great for them and also for me to see what areas of the library they are unfamiliar with and might need further instruction.  Each "mission" required the teams to take a photo or video of something from the list, such as a book from the fantasy fiction section, the circulation desk, the book return bin, etc.  They needed to take a photo of themselves on the rug displaying perfect storytime behavior, and videos of them using their shelf markers to remove and replace books.  It was a fun way to explore the library! One mission was to find a book from the Horror/Suspense section and take a picture of themselves looking scared. These girls knew just where...

Some of our younger students have been learning about the importance of book care. I am sure to stress to all our students that the books in our library belong to EVERYONE, so we have to make sure we take good care of them so we can all share them.  I use items from my book care bag to explain the expectations. Some of the rules I stress are: Keeping books away from pets and younger siblings Avoiding food and drinks while reading Keeping books away from water, especially keeping books and water bottles separate in backpacks No drawing in books Only hold books with clean hands Use a bookmark And most importantly, enjoy the story!

Battle of the Books signups is on! An email went home regarding Battle of the Books signups.  This is a reading incentive program offered to students in grades 3-8.  Check out the Battle of the Books page over to the right for book lists and more information. The deadline to sign up is October 4th.  The cost is $20 (billed through FACTS) which includes the cost of a t-shirt.  Please reach out if you have any questions!

Needless to say, schools go through lots of boxes of tissues.  To help build up our "stock," I'm holding an optional Tissue Box Design Contest! The directions are simple: purchase a new box of tissues (any size) and decorate the outside of the box with a book theme.  It can be any book a student chooses --picture books or chapter books.  The theme can revolve around a book, series, character, or genre.  Let those creative juices flow! I'm planning on having teachers vote for their favorite.  This lucky student will get to choose a book from the Scholastic Bookfair Catalog later this fall! While we will always accept tissues, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes at school, the deadline for the contest will be October 18th.  I will be sure to share the tissues with my fellow specialists and teachers! Students should bring the tissues right to the Library. Good luck and have fun.  I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

I can't wait to welcome Dusti Bowling to our school on September 24th! I loved her first two books, Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus and also 24 Hours in Nowhere .  It will be such an honor to host her at BSS, and just a week after the release of the sequel to Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus, entitled Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus .  She will be presenting to Grades 4-7. Anyone who would like to preorder one of her books to be signed that day can fill out the form that was sent home to families of grades 4-7.  I also gave students in these grades a hard copy of the form, and the information can also be found below.  Just be sure to return the form by THIS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13th! Thank you so much to the Henderson family for purchasing TEN books from the BSS Library Amazon Wish List! These books were donated in loving memory of Bryce and Brinley's great-grandmother, who was a devout Catholic and an avid reader. I am so excited to share these books with our students!
