Week of Oct. 28 - Nov. 1

ROOM ON THE BROOM First graders listened to Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, then they all got to work to design a new and improved broom for the witch and other creatures.  They were very creative and came up with some great features to allow more passengers to ride the broom!   HALLOWEEN STORIES All the grades enjoy hearing Halloween and scary stories, so October is fun!  Books such as  C reepy Carrots, Big Pumpkin, Pumpkin Jack, The Monsterator, I Want My Mummy, The Bones of Fred McPhee, The Tailypo, are a few we have been enjoying.  Mary Shelley and Intro to Science Fiction I shared the book She Made a Monster: How Mary Shelley Created Frankenstein by Lynn Fulton with 4th graders.  We learned that Shelley was only 18 when she began writing Frankenstein, and how in the early 1800's it was considered scandalous for a women to be writing such a dreadful story.  According to the author's note, "Just l

Week of October 21-25 It has been another busy week in the Library! Here are some of the highlights: 5th Grade Saints Research, 2nd Grade Little Red Riding Hood unit, Battle of the Books team meetings, and voting for the Tissue Box Design Contest.  SAINTS RESEARCH IN 5th GRADE 5th Graders have been working hard on their Saints project.  They have their research complete and are now working on typing up their prayers and diary pages for their posters.  They have really put so much work into this project and should be proud of themselves! 2ND GRADERS CREATE VENN DIAGRAMS We completed our Little Red Riding Hood unit by comparing details from the three stories we read (traditional, Little Salma from Ghana, and Lon Po Po from China).  They really picked up on how to chart each similarity and difference.  And then we finished with reading a hysterical story called The Cat, the Dog,  Little Red, the Exploding Eggs, the Wolf, and Grandma by Diane Fox.
