Week of January 20 - January 24

With the four day holiday week, the week just flew by! 4th Grade State Float and Famous American Research Project 4th graders will have their Parade of States on March 18.  Each student will research a state and create a float based on facts they learned about their state.  They will also be researching and writing about a famous person from that state.  The Library has a set of state books, so each student was able to browse information about their chosen state.  They have also begun deciding who they would like to research.  The research will continue during Technology class. Fiction and Nonfiction in Kindergarten After reading a fiction and nonfiction book about flying squirrels last week, we tackled dinosaurs this time.  We read Edwina: The Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She was Extinct as well as a nonfiction dinosaur book.  We looked at the cover of Edwina and determined this was the fiction book because dinosaurs wouldn't be wearing a hat, makeup and jewelry! THERE WAS AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A FLY Preschool students love puppets and moving around, so this week's story was tons of fun! We read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms Taback, based on the old American folk poem.  Its a cumulative tale with repeated rhymes and phrases, and even has a moral (Never swallow a horse).  Students enjoyed putting all the animals in her mouth when we reached that part of the story.   KINDERGARTNERS COMPARE FICTION AND NONFICTION The Scaredy Squirrel picture book series by Melanie Watt is hugely popular. What’s not to like about a squirrel who is afraid of just about everything–most of all germs, tarantulas and killer bees!  So when Scaredy Squirrel has a disastrous day and falls out of his tree (after being all worked up about seeing a killer bee), he makes a brilliant discovery. Instead of falling down into a bush of poison ivy (another fear!), he realizes he is a flying squirrel and he simply glides to the next tree.

Happy New Year! It's great to be back and we are looking forward to a great 2020! "The Toilet Papers" Book Posters I am always trying to spread the word about great books we have in our Library.  Over vacation, I hung some book posters in some of the student bathrooms to get a buzz going about some of these wonderful books.  To my delight, the posters are doing their job because I've had several students come to the Library to request these specific books.  Whatever it takes! The templates were downloaded from thebookwrangler.com.  Sibert Smackdown! To celebrate the upcoming children's book awards announced at the end of the month, 5th graders are taking an in depth read of a nonfiction book.  The books have already been awarded a Sibert Medal or are considered to be a contender for this year.  The Robert  F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informa
