Week of February 24 - Feb. 28

There were meetings going on in the library a couple of days this week, so I became a "traveling librarian." I took my show on the road and visited classrooms. We did some fun activities to fill the time since we were missing book checkout.

Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen

Extra Yarn tells the story of a girl named Annabelle who lives in a dreary town where the only colors you could see was the white of snow and the black of soot.  She knits sweaters for herself, her dog, her classmates, her family, and people in her neighborhood, but her ball of yarn never runs out.  So she knits things for inanimate objects such as houses and trees and birdhouses and mailboxes.  When an evil archduke finds out about Annabelle and her magic yarn, he offers her a large sum of money for it. When she refuses, he becomes furious and will do anything to get the yarn for himself.  It was a great story about kindness, good/evil, generosity, and making the world more beautiful.  We "knit" some sweaters for our own little creatures.  We wrapped yarn around popsicle sticks we decorated as cats, dogs, mailboxes--whatever the students wanted.  I loved seeing their creations!

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt

I think everyone has played Rock, Paper, Scissors at least once in their lives.  Daywalt's story is absolutely hysterical and explains how this game came to be.  The characters (Rock, Paper, and Scissors) are sad because they never lose and it is getting boring.  They face opponents such as rolls of tape, dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets, a peach, and a clothespin, but they never lose.  Until they meet each other, and an epic battle ensues. After reading the story in 3rd grade classes, we had our own epic Rock, Paper, and Scissors tournament. It was so much fun!

SIBERT MEDAL PROJECT

5th graders completed their Sibert Medal green screen projects. They were asked to talk about a nonfiction book that was selected for this award that is given to nonfiction books, or one that they thought should win it.  They were filmed in front of the green screen so the background in the video could be changed to a page from the book.  It was a fun project!
