ALA Children's Book Awards Announced!

If you're a librarian or book lover, it's better than the Oscars!  You're always hoping for your favorites to win, or you learn about some new titles that maybe you haven't read yet.  Here are some highlights:

Newbery Award winner: Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena, Illustrated by Christian Robinson

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

This is the first time that I remember that a picture book author has received this award.  Interestingly enough, Last Stop on Market Street also won a Caldecott Honor award!

Newbery Honor Awards went to:

The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson
Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan

It is amazing that a graphic novel (Roller Girl) was selected! Graphic novels are becoming so popular, and it's fantastic that their literary merit is finally being recognized.

Caldecott Award winner: Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattick, Illustrated by Sophie Blackall

He surely is the most famous bear, and another book called Winnie: The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh by Sally M. Walker was also in contention for an award.

Caldecott Honor Awards went to:
Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews and Illustrated by Bryan Collier
Waiting by Kevin Henkes
Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer: The Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement by Carole Boston Weatherford and Illustrated by Ekua Holmes
Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena and Illustrated by Christian Robinson

Schneider Family Book Award Winner: Fish in a Tree

Loved this book! It is a middle school Battle of the Books title, so I'm glad that more students will be exposed to this book because of it!  The title comes from the quote "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish about its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid"  by Albert Einstein. In other words, everyone has different talents and learns in a different way.

Schneider Family Book Honor Awards:
The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Emmanuel's Dream: The Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah by Laurie Ann Thompson, Illustrated by Sean Qualls

Coretta Scott King Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award: Jerry Pinkney
