Choosing a just right book and designing your dream house!

1st and 2nd Graders loved Chris Van Dusen's book If I Built a House.  It shows all the fun and fantastic room designs of an imaginative boy, like a living room with a ball pit, a kitchen that cooks delicious meals AND cleans up, and a no gravity room to practice flying.  The students loved the designs and drew some of their favorites and came up with some new ideas. The endpapers of the book are covered with blueprints for some of the designs, and we talked about the importance of planning out what you want to build first. A very clever book!

We also talked about finding a good fit book for them to read.  I went over the steps of IPICK, which reminds a student to find a book that looks interesting to them and that they are able to decode and comprehend.  I told them that it takes practice to find the perfect book, but it becomes easier with practice.
