Week of October 21-25

Week of October 21-25

It has been another busy week in the Library! Here are some of the highlights: 5th Grade Saints Research, 2nd Grade Little Red Riding Hood unit, Battle of the Books team meetings, and voting for the Tissue Box Design Contest.

 SAINTS RESEARCH IN 5th GRADE

5th Graders have been working hard on their Saints project.  They have their research complete and are now working on typing up their prayers and diary pages for their posters.  They have really put so much work into this project and should be proud of themselves!

2ND GRADERS CREATE VENN DIAGRAMS

We completed our Little Red Riding Hood unit by comparing details from the three stories we read (traditional, Little Salma from Ghana, and Lon Po Po from China).  They really picked up on how to chart each similarity and difference.  And then we finished with reading a hysterical story called The Cat, the Dog,  Little Red, the Exploding Eggs, the Wolf, and Grandma by Diane Fox. As cat attempts to tell the traditional version of the story, Dog can't help but interrupt and ask a bunch of questions.  Because she wears a cape with a hood, Dog insists that she must be a superhero and wants to know what her superpowers are.  Cat tries to be patient and tells him it's not that kind of story, but Dog keeps asking more and more questions.  Hilarious!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS MEETINGS
We had our first team meetings this week. It gave me a chance to go over the expectations and for teams to discuss who will be responsible for reading which books.  I explained the requirements for receiving stickers for their team posters and handed out book lists and Book Summary packets. Each team has a poster so the students can keep track of what they have read.  In order to receive a sticker for their poster, students need to fill out a Book Summary Form and bring me a Parent Signature Slip confirming the student has read the book and filled out the form. These forms are available in the library and by clicking the highlighted links.  I encourage the students to keep the Book Summary Forms all together at home in a folder or notebook, so they will have these notes to review as the Battle becomes closer. I told them we will meet again in another month or so students can check in with their teammates.

TISSUE BOX DESIGN CONTEST
Students have been voting for their favorite tissue box students submitted for the design contest.  There were nine creative submissions! The box with the most votes will receive a free book!
